Earlier this week, DonRockwell.com member Destruya posted that a new restaurant named Clarity is coming to Vienna near Italian restaurant Bonaroti. As the poster notes, Clarity describes itself on Twitter as a “Freestyle American Bistro” from Jonathan Krinn, formerly of the 2941 Restaurant, and Jason Maddens, formerly of the Central Michel Richard. The restaurant’s Facebook page also posts pictures of the plans and construction, which is underway. Clarity is set to debut in “early 2015” at 422 Maple Ave. Vienna, VA.

Pizzaiolo Edan MacQuaid Finds New Home in Maine

In a post on DonRockwell.com, former D.C. pizza-maker Edan MacQuaid reports that he’s found a new home in Maine, “about 5 miles from the heart of Bar Harbor.” The chef notes that “We have opened a little restaurant – Sweet Pea’s Cafe – in a beautiful setting, on a farm.” MacQuaid also notes that the restaurant has its own oyster farm, and its “Western Bay Oysters” could soon be available in DC area.

Dumplings & Beyond Now Open in Glover Park

Last week, DonRockwell.com member AHDC reported that Dumplings & Beyond has opened in Glover Park. Although he raved about the food, noting: The dumplings were clearly made in-house and were top notch, the sichuan boiled beef in fiery sauce rivaled (or possibly exceeded) Sichuan Jin River, and the garlic eggplant was out of this world,” AHDC notes that “the ratio of authentic dishes to Americanized food was pretty low.” The menu is available on the restaurant’s website.

Lombardi’s Pizza Delivery Opens in Vienna

Yesterday, a DonRockwell.com reader noted a sign for Lombardi’s Pizza “coming soon” to Vienna. However, the restaurant’s Facebook page confirms that the restaurant opened on April 29. Don Rockwell notes that “Lombardi’s is under the same ownership as Vienna Inn and Church Street Pizzeria. In fact, it’s the same pizza as Church Street, but in a different location (so by definition, cooked in a different oven), and for delivery only.”

Antonio Burrell Named Executive Chef at Eventide in Clarendon

Don Rockwell reports that “Antonio Burrell officially becomes Executive Chef tomorrow night at Eventide.” However, Don cautions: “Before anyone flocks to go there, it will take some time for Antonio to become acclimated, and the menu being featured tomorrow night (Tuesday) will be the exact same menu as before. Innkeepers Star and Neal Wavra are leaving The Ashby Inn. A note on the Inn’s Facebook page says: “After four plus years at the Ashby, our time has come to an end. We remain committed to all of you and regret not having the opportunity to say goodbye in person. Osteria Elisir “Closed for Good”

Chef Enzo Fargione announced today on DonRockwell.com that, after two years, Osteria Elisir “is now officially closed for good.” The Italian restaurant was originally conceived as a tasting menu destination, but underwent a makeover last year to a casual osteria format in the hopes of attracting more diners. Despite the closing, the talented chef seems upbeat, noting “Elisir and Osteria Elisir have made many people happy and will continue to live in the hearts of those who had supported us and appreciated us,” adding “Thank you to all of you Washingtonians.”

Italian Store to Open Second Location in Westover

DonRockwell.com user VikingJew passes along a report from ArlNow that a second location of The Italian Store will replace the 7-11 in Arlington’s Westover neighborhood next year. The popular store in Arlington’s Lyon Village, famous for its Italian subs and pizza, has been open since 1980. The new location, at 5839 Washington Blvd, will be about twice the size of the original.

Bangkok 54 on Columbia Pike Suffers Duct Fire Overnight

DonRockwell.com user Buscuit Girl relays a report from WJLA that there was a fire at Bangkok 54 overnight. The report notes only that “Firefighters worked through the night putting out a fire at a restaurant in Arlington. They were called out to ‘Bangkok 54’ in the 2900 block of Columbia Pike for a report of a fire in the duct work. They quickly knocked the fire down, but were on the scene for a while longer putting out hot spots. No one was hurt.” No word yet on whether the restaurant will be closed as a result or for how long.

Zensai Sushi Now Open in Silver Spring

A DonRockwell.com reader reports that Zensai Sushi recently opened in Silver Spring at 8624 Colesville Road, next to the Filmore. Don notes that the chef Zen Zensai appears to be: (1) Thai; (2) “a dedicated husband and father;” (3) a person with “lots of friends;” and (4) generally “a great guy.” He also “claims to have won ‘The Gold Medal’ in the 2007 ‘Maki Sushi Making’ category in the ‘Sushi Chef Olympics Competition’ held in Tokyo, Japan.”

Chef RJ Cooper Reacts Negatively to Review by DonRockwell.com User

Chef R.J. Cooper of Rogue 24 has responded to a post on DonRockwell.com from member “mdt,” who noted of a recent meal at the restaurant: “[o]verall the food was good, but very few of the dishes were that exciting or interesting to eat.” The chef initially invited mdt back on the house, but when he declined, Cooper took the opportunity to criticize the poster, noting “I don’t know what you do for a living, however if I were to publicly ridicule and determine value on your product and proceed to communicate a value of a product form research online you would be offend as well.” Needless to say, matters escalated.
