Macon Bistro & Larder Serves Grown-Up Food in Chevy Chase

Despite its freshman standing, the concept behind Chevy Chase’s Macon Bistro and Larder goes back a decade according to owner Tony Brown. The French bistro with southern influence restaurant took a big risk opening the day before Mother’s Day 2014 and so far, the welcome atmosphere from the neighborhood hasn’t waned. Evan Cablayan is the new bar manager at Macon Bistro & Larder, and he has brought with him a love of “farm-to-glass” cocktail mixing. Cablayan uses the freshest ingredients possible for his creations — for instance, he gets his persimmons from a Chevy Chase resident who has a persimmon tree on her property.

Unfortunately, for those waiting for Indique Heights to return to Chevy Chase, the wait is over — the restaurant has closed permanently. The owners, Surfy Rahman and K.N. Vinod, cite funding as the main reason they have decided to say goodbye to their eight year old venture. The restaurant closed down in July so that the restaurant could be subdivided into smaller pieces. However, reconstruction costs grew so large that eventually the owners had to walk away. Spike Mendelsohn will be hosting a brand new food television series called “Midnight Feast.” The show, which takes place in Chelsea Market in NYC, will begin October 15.

D.C. VegFest will be heading back to Navy Yard on September 20. Keynote speech will be given by Robin Quivers; food will be served by Amsterdam Falafelshop, Sticky Fingers Bakery, and more.

Macon Bistro and Larder is spotlighting rose wines for the rest of the month. Free tasting will be held on Wednesdays between 5pm and 6pm.

Banana Leaf Restaurant Opening Any Day Now in Chevy Chase

A Sri Lankan restaurant called Banana Leaf is on the way for Chevy Chase. The restaurant, owned by Raj Perera, will debut sometime next week with a special grand opening party including employees of the Sri Lankan Embassy. Banana Leaf was supposed to open in June, but issues involving permits slowed down the opening. On the menu: curry, saffron rice, and a dish called “lamprai,” which combines rice, protein, cashew curry, eggplants, plantains and chili sauce inside a banana leaf. PoPville has word that Banana Leaf is close to opening in the former Clover Market space in Chevy Chase. The New York import has apparently worked out its permitting issues and hopes to open “by the end of the month.” The restaurant’s “Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian” menu, which features Sri Lankan and South Indian specialties from chef Raj Perera, is available on the company’s website.
