Masala Art's offers a wide range of traditional Indian specialties with a number of good meat and vegetarian selections. Service is excellent and the kitchen isn't timid with the spices. The original in Tenleytown recently spawned a sibling on the Southwest Waterfront. Either is one of the best choices in its respective neighborhood.

2 Stars (11/12/2014)
"As at his original spot, [owner Atul] Bhola … [built] a menu around dishes popular in India, but lesser-known here in the States. … [However,] 95 percent of the dishes differ from those at the maiden Masala Art…. Credit Ajay Ramola, a New Delhi chef who … displays a deft hand across the many sections of his menu. … His appetizers include two that may crack my list of greatest chaats. … Still, there are cautionary signs. … [A] curry that tasted heavenly in the bowl sometimes … becom[es] too diluted when poured over the spiced rice. … The second Masala Art mirrors the originator in many positive ways — in friendliness, in inventiveness and, often, in deliciousness — but… [i]t still needs a bar program that competes with Washington’s best." See Full Review…»

Unrated (8/18/2013) — Cheap Eats 2013
"Like your curries with a kick? Head to this bustling Tenleytown dining room where most things, even typically mild chicken tikka masala, have a spiciness that creeps up on you. Meanwhile, the lamb vindaloo is best suited for those who get their Buffalo wings extra-extra hot. Mellow the slow burn of the gravies with garlic-and-pepper or cilantro-sprinkled naan." See Full Review…»

"Sometimes brilliant cooking, sometimes not, kind service, regional specialties, very reasonably priced, badly needs consistency." See 5/7/2013 Review…»
